YOG programme will be a mixed team event in taekwondo, which will be contested alongside the five individual weight categories for male and female athletes, and will bring the speed, drama and thrilling action of team taekwondo to an Olympic audience for the first time as a medal event.
The mixed-gender event will likely feature a mixture of traditional team match format and the high-octane tag-team format that has quickly become one of the most exciting spectacles for taekwondo fans.
Pitching nation against nation, the team bouts are composed of three rounds. The first round is fought with each athlete, from the lightest to the heaviest, facing his or her counterpart in the opposing team. The two subsequent rounds are then fought using the exciting tag-team format, where athletes compete against the same gender (no female-male combat) but different weight categories
The action is fast-paced, with athletes unleashing flurries of the sport’s high-scoring and spectacular attacking techniques.
The event is sure to be one of the most exciting additions to the YOG Dakar 2022, with World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue among those who is looking forward to seeing the event at the first Youth Olympic Games in Africa.
“We are extremely gratified by the IOC decisions, which fortify our ambitions to promote team taekwondo, a highly entertaining format of our sport,” he said in December last year. “The mixed team event further enhances gender equality, and I am sure all taekwondo athletes and fans around the world will join me in appreciating the IOC decision.”
