Olympic medal prospect quits sport

India had a successful outing at the 2018 Youth Olympics held at Buenos Aires where they managed their best-ever medal haul of 13 medals including three gold, to finish at respectable 17th position.

Indian won medals in eight different sports. The country got it’s ever medal in Judo when Tababi Devi, grabbed a silver in the 44kg category. The Manipur Girl was seen as a bright medal prospect at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Less than two years after her success at the Youth Olympics, Tababi has given up on the sport which has left the coaches disappointed. Devi’s name has been removed from the list of judokas included for SAI’s development programme, to nurture them for the Paris Games.

In 2019, she won a gold in 2019 Asia-Oceania Cadet Championship. However, she had to suffer a first-round exit at the World Cadet Championships held at Almaty in September 2019, which was also her last competition.

Tababi got married to her longtime friend earlier this year and hasn’t trained since January. To get Tababi back to the sport, JSW group even offered a job to her husband, Herojit, who is also a coach in their village near Imphal, but he hasn’t given a positive response to that.
