As the outbreak of global pandemic novel coronavirus gets better in England, they hosted their first series against West Indies in which the first Test has already been done. West Indies started the game as the underdog in Southampton but they played brilliantly and emerged winners while fighting against all odds.
The brilliant performance of Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel with the ball and Jermaine Blackwood’s stunning 95 while chasing set up the winning foundation for the West Indies as they have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series. After their superb win, the cricket fraternity was all praise for West Indies’ brilliant all-round show. India captain Virat Kohli was one of them who took to Twitter after their victory, citing: “Wow @windiescricket what a win. Top display of test cricket.”
The West Indies were given a 200-run target to win the game on the final day of the first Test by the hosts, England but they were reduced to 27 for three wickets all credits to England pace bowler Jofra Archer’s early double strike.
Blackwood, although, brought the Windies back into the game with a stable knock but fell just five runs short of his second Test century when they needed 11 runs to win. On the other hand, John Campell, who earlier had retired hurt after being hit by Jofra Archer on his toe, returned to the field and hit the winning runs.
West Indies captain Jason Holder praised his side’s brilliant performance in the match, saying that it was the best day he has had in the longer format of the game so far.
“It is right up there with the best victories we’ve had as a group,” Holder told Sky Sports. “To me, yesterday was probably the best day I’ve had in Test cricket,” added the West Indian all-rounder.
“It was a hard, long toil and the bowlers really put it in. Every time I asked a bowler to come up and give a spell, they came up and gave a massive effort,” he further concluded.
