Sumit Nagal cruised into the second round of the US Open after defeating Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round.
Nagal, ranked 124 in the world, totally dominated the first round as he broke the American thrice in the first set to take the set in just 23 minutes.
Klahn performed a bit better in the first set but Nagal broke his serve in the 6th game to take the set 6-3.
Klahn bounced back in the third set as he broke Sumit in the 8th game to take the set 6-3. The fourth set saw Nagal dominate again as he won 6-1 to seal his berth in the second round of the men’s singles.
With this win, the 23-year-old became the first Indian in seven years to gain a victory in a singles main draw match at a Grand Slam.
The world number 124 will now challenge second seed Dominic Thiem in the second seed. The Austrian was leading Spain’s Jaume Munar 7-6, 6-3 when the latter injured his knee and could not continue.
