Shubman Gill was born in Fazilka, a city in Punjab to Lakhwinder Gill and Keart Gill. He has a sister named Shahneel Gill.
His father Lakhwinder Singh once spoke about his son’s passion for the game.
“Shubman never liked any other toy. He always loved playing with the bat and ball. He used to play with the cricket bat and ball even during going to bed,” Lakhwinder told PTI.
“We fully supported him for achieving his dream to become a cricketer, dedicating 15 years on him to enable him to become a world-class cricketer. We even left our work and skipped several family functions including marriage ceremonies of our relatives so we could dedicate as much time as we could on him,” he added further.
His father, an agriculturist would ask the hired people to help on the farm to throw balls at Gill to help him practice batting. Lakhwinder was convinced of his talent and moved the family to Mohali and rented a house near the PCA Stadium.
While he was anonymously working out at the small academy opposite Mohali’s PCA Stadium, former Indian pacer Karsan Ghavri held a bowling camp for talented seamers where he needed kids to bat against his bowlers. And incidentally, that’s when young Shubman came into the picture.
In an Under-16 Inter-District tournament, he scored 351 runs in one inning. Even on his Under-16 state debut for Punjab, he smashed an unbeaten double century. All this came in the year 2014. He made his List A debut for Punjab in 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy in the same year.
As the years were passing the young gun was making an impact with his games. In 2018, Shubman was named in India C’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. The form led him to make an entry in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy.
With his batting powers in the domestic level, he impressed the selectors and was given a chance to play in the U19 side in 2017. In February, India won the series in England which Shubman was part of. In the same year, he was named the vice-captain of India’s squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Gill made the entire nation proud with his batting skills on the international level. He was the leading run-scorer for India in the World Cup, with 372 runs. He was also named the player of the tournament. The young talent was also called for India (senior team). He traveled to New Zealand in 2018 but couldn’t make a debut.
Following Gill’s Player of the Series award in the U-19 World Cup, he attracted the interest of four franchises during IPL 2018 auction including Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals. However, in the end, KKR made the final bid and snatched him for Rs 1.80 crore. In the season, he has scored 296 runs at an impressive average of 32.88 from 14 matches.
