Shreyas Iyer claims Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting has helped him grow as a player

Shreyas Iyer – the Delhi Capitals captain has said that the head coach Ricky Ponting has helped him a lot to grow as a cricketer. Iyer was named the captain of Delhi in the middle of 2018 when former player Gautam Gambhir had decided to leave the captaincy.

Being a youngster, Iyer tried his best to lead the side and left his mark in the 2019 season where he led the team brilliantly and finished at the third position as well, missing the chance to reach the final by a whisker.

Before the starting of the 13th edition of the cash-rich league, Shreyas Iyer spoke about the influence the head coach Ricky Ponting has had on his game and he also said that the former Australia captain has given him the freedom to express himself on the ground.

“I feel blessed to be working with someone as Ricky Ponting’s stature so closely. He is such a legend and makes everyone from the most senior one to the newest guy feel at home and as a part of the unit,” Iyer revealed in the recent video uploaded on BCCI official website. “As a captain, he gives me freedom and that has helped me grow as a cricketer.”

While he was being asked if Delhi Capitals can win their trophy this year, Iyer has said that all the players required to contribute to their success to win their maiden title.

“All pieces of the puzzles have to fall in the right place for a team to become a champion team. IPL is a long tournament and results keep going up and down invariably. The one thing that worked for us last season was how differently each player stepped up on different occasion and that was crucial for our success and will be this year too. Having not one consistent performer but many of them,” Shreyas Iyer concluded.

The 13th edition of Indian Premier League will begin from September 19th and the final will be played on November 10th. The 53-day tournament will take place in UAE instead of India, keeping the rise of COVID-10 cases in mind.
