Indian badminton superstar PV Sindhu has decided not to play in the upcoming Thomas and Uber Cup to be hosted in Denmark in October, terming the reason behind her decision as ‘personal’.
The 2020 Thomas Cup (men) & Uber Cup (women) is the first international badminton tournament after six months of suspension amid the novel Coronavirus pandemic. Scheduled to take place from 3rd to 11th October in Aarhus, Denmark, the tournament is expected to see participation from a number of top Indian shuttlers.
However, PV Sindhu has pulled out of the prestigious tournament despite willing to be a part of it, as confirmed by the player’s father and former professional volleyball player PV Ramana.
“Yes, she has pulled out of the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals due to personal reasons,” Ramana said on Wednesday, “Her presence is required during that time as we have some personal work. She was very much looking forward to playing in the tournament. She had expressed her willingness to participate.”
It was also learned that Sindhu’s possibility to take part in the Denmark Open, to be hosted on the heels of the Thomas and Uber Cup in October in Odense is also on the fence.
“For the Denmark Open, her entry will be sent, but can’t say with surety. If she remains available, then she might go. Otherwise, may be the next tournament,” Ramana added.
The ‘Super 750 Denmark Open’, which will run from 13th to 18th October, is set to mark the resumption of BWF World Tour. Followed by the Super 750, a 2nd Denmark Open titled ‘Denmark Masters’ is scheduled between 20th to 25th October, which might see a participation from Sindhu.
Following the COVID-19 lock down in the country, the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist has resumed her training at the national badminton camp, currently being held at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.
The Academy is also preparing to host another camp for the Thomas and Uber cup from 8th September onwards, alongside the national camp for Sindhu and other Tokyo Olympic hopefuls.
