Aiming for dreams
Jyothi was born in Hyderabad on July 3, 1996 to Vennam Surendran Kumar and Sri Durga. Her father is a former Kabaddi player and now a veterinary doctor in Vijayawada and mother is a housewife. Jyothi completed her schooling and intermediate from Nalanda Institute.
According to some reports, she is currently pursuing MBA at KL University after completing her B Tech course. It was her father, who forced Jyothi into archery in 2007. With immense hard work and practice she carved her name as a junior archer and won World Championship and Asian Championship at the early age.
A young prodigy in archery
Jyothi was a swimmer but later gave up the sport and took archery as profession. Since breathing techniques are beneficial in sport of archery, many experts says that her expertise in swimming has helped her in archery a lot.
She started participating in international competitions since 2011. Jyothi trains at the Volga Archery Academy in Vijayawada. Surekha, a detection of former India coach Ch. Lenin, first made headlines at the age of 13. At 13 she clinched five medals at the Mexican Grand Prix archery competition.
Many will not believe that this young prodigy has been a sub-junior, junior, national level champion of India at the age of 16. She bagged three out of three gold medals in the National competitions establishing herself as a real challenger in 2012. She shoots arrows to an average score of 9.46, which is considered good by the international standards.

Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam is the only ‘brother-sister’ pair that forms a perfect archery team. Delhi based Abhishek and Andhra’s Jyothi have complete different backgrounds but they have been winning medals consistently in the mixed compound event. The pair has won the silver at the Asian Championships in 2017 and four bronze in all four World Cups in 2018. “Abhishek bhaiyya is like a brother to me. We gel maybe because we’ve been attending national camps together since 2012,” says 23-year-old Jyothi once quoted.
