How Japan will ‘simplifiy’ Olympic Games?

Olympic games postponed for the first time in its 124 years history due to coronavirus pandemic. Since then there has been speculation whether postponed games will happen or will be cancelled. Various scientists said that it will be difficult to organise the Tokyo Olympic with no vaccine available.

John Coates, head of IOC’s coordination commission, has indicated that October will be a critical period for assessing whether the Japanese capital will be able to welcome the world, according to Australian media.

Japan has already spent $12.6 billion even before games were postponed. Now Japan will bear the cost of delay, which is around 2 billion to 6 billion USD. But how Japan will make up for that during the global recession when the tourism sector is badly hit.

Japan’s economy and government policy revolved around the Tokyo Olympics since 2013, but now we will see empty stadiums, which are only viable options right now to organise major sports events. There have been reports that seating can be reduced for Olympic games, this also leaves organisers in limbo as millions of tickets has been already sold.

Japan is considering changing and simplifying the format of the Tokyo Olympics, which include a reduction in the number of spectators and a scaling back of the opening and closing ceremonies of both the Olympics and Paralympics. Olympic Games will be simplified as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, Koyoto news reported.

If athletes, sports staff, and volunteers are quarantined before the games then let’s just look at numbers. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, 11238 athletes participated in 306 events across 28 sports. In the Tokyo Olympic Games, we will see 339 events across 33 sports. But there are some events which are cut off to equal gender ratio, still, we will see approximately 11000 athletes and almost double sports staff and officials. There will be around 35k volunteers and 85k police and security staff. This is a huge number and it will be really difficult to arrange a quarantine facility for everyone.

Cutting down the number of sports is an option. Olympics has 28 core sports and five sports which are added to Tokyo games. Some of these sports like 3×3 basketball, sports climbing, and baseball can be dropped to reduce the number of athletes.
