Hosting the AFC Asian Cup will define the future of Women’s football in India

On Friday, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) granted the rights to host 2022 Women’s Asian cup to India. It will be the first time, the tournament will come to Indian soil since 1979. Aditi Chauhan who became the first women to play in the Premier League gave her thoughts about the current development in Indian women’s football.

The Indian captain believes the AFC Women’s Asian cup is a great platform to showcase their skills. Since India are the host, it is a great opportunity to attract more supporters towards women’s football in the country. The competition will help to bring closer attention to more stakeholders within the industry.

“It is very important to maintain the momentum that we have built-in the last couple of years under our coach Maymol Rocky. I believe the AIFF has further plans for more international exposure. I hope we can continue competing against the best,” Aditi added.

India is currently ranked 55th in the world and won the gold at South Asian Games in December last year. Talking about the U-17 girls, Aditi said, “ Although I don’t want to name the players right now because I don’t want to add to the existing pressure, I can say that our head coach has plans to incorporate young players in the Asian cup in 2022.”

The former West Ham United goalkeeper believes, with two International events lined up, there is a chance for more players to go and play abroad. Bala Devi who was the recent player to go and play for Rangers in the Scottish league.

“The experience that international exposure provides is certainly unattached. From my own experience, I can say, it has helped me a lot in terms of improving all aspects of the game,” Chauhan revealed.

Aditi Chauhan is also hoping that more ISL and I-League teams put up a women’s team for the IWL league which she won last year with Gokulam Kerala. “To make women’s football more professional, it is crucial for the big corporates to invest in the facilities and help in having a longer domestic season,” she added.

Aditi, through her “She kicks football academy’ aspires to develop the teenagers. Amid lockdown, she is planning to launch an online training course.
