Bicycle Sales Spike As Fitness Enthusiasts Embrace Cycling Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

COVID-19 pandemic may have brought in a lot of restrictions in the past few months, but it has made many individuals choose cycling as an option to remain physically fit. The city of Shimla had witnessed a spike in sale of bicycles during this period.

With gyms and fitness centers shutting operations during this period, the rising numbers of health conscious individuals have started taking cycling as an option to stay fit. Moreover, office goers have also begun to favour cycling as the best travel option specifically to avoid traveling by public transport.

There has been a tremendous rise in sale of bicycles particularly during this period. Since Shimla is a hilly town, individuals in Shimla have preferred to buy bicycles that come with gears. The prices of these bicycles are ranging between Rs. 12,500/- and the costs can go more than 3 lakh rupees.

The number of cyclists in Shimla have risen temporarily from just five in the year 2004 to more than 2000 bicycles today. Some of the towns such as Dharamsala, Kullu, Manali, Bilaspur, Solan, Palampur have also been patronizing cycling in the recent years.

Amit Kashyap, Deputy Commissioner, Shimla had in the past few days restricted the movement of cycles on the Mall that starts from Central Telegraph Office and reaches up to Shimla Club, after an elderly woman had been hit by a cyclist. He had also mentioned that since many children, tourists and senior citizens are using the particular stretch, it may lead to higher possibilities of accidents occurring to them, if the cyclists were permitted to travel on the stretch. But the cyclists have requested the DC to permit them to go for cycling on The Mall for a limited time period starting from 8 pm to 8 am, since the crowd would be comparatively less during this period.
