After Anjum finished her NCC training, the next couple of years were a little hard for her. Since she wasn’t with the NCC, she couldn’t get the weapons from them. That time she didn’t any sponsor as well. The struggle affected her performance as well. On top of all this, she was plagued with injuries. Anjum did not let these factors affect her morale. She took help from a Chandigarh-based physio, and got back in the game much stronger. When she became a part of the Indian juniors team, things drastically changed for her and her career took off.
Anjum Moudgil first started shooting in 2009 and went on to become part of the Indian shooting team in 2010. In September 2014, she represented India in World Shooting Championship in Spain.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Anjum won a silver medal by scoring 455.7 points – 151.9 points in kneeling and 157.1 in prone. She displayed her immense talent by shattering the qualifying score record. She scored a total of 589 points (196 in kneeling, 199 in prone, and 194 in standing).
Unfortunately, Anjum couldn’t qualify for the finals of the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games 2018 as she finished 9th in the qualifications. It was quite a heart-breaking tournament for her. She represented India in the 50 m three position shooting event.
“Missing out on a medal at the Asian Games was a disappointment but then it was due to one bad series. We came here on the 23rd and it meant I could spend the last 3-4 day training at the 10m Air Rifle range. A medal here in the 10m Air Rifle event was one of the targets. I missed the final at the World Cup held here earlier this year but that helped me understand the conditions here,” Moudgil told the Indian Express.
At the ISSF World Cup 2018, Anjum won the silver medal in women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event. The podium finish was doubly special as it ensured a Tokyo Olympics 2020 berth for her. Hana Im from Korea won the top-most honour and Eunhea Jung from Korea as well, won the bronze medal in the event.
Anjum’s coach, Deepali Deshpande, has played a major role in shaping young Anjum’s career. It was because of her guidance and firm belief in Anjum’s talent, that she decided to pursue shooting as a career seriously.
“I used to enjoy shooting but I was still not very serious about shooting as a career. Because I never had a coach, I never knew how it is to work with a coach. So asking seniors was okay with me. But when I saw others having personal coaches and shooting well, it was my luck that [Deshpande] got into the Indian team as a coach and everything changed. She knew how to build up our basics and our technique. So that’s when we started shooting seriously as coach and student,” she told the Scroll.in.
Anjum’s mother, Shubh, is an university-level shooter and introduced her to shooting. Initially, she started with a pistol but found more success with a rifle. Her father, Sudershan Moudgil, is an advocate. Anjum is trained as a NCC cadet under Unit Commander Colonel Chauhan. Her mother wanted Anjum to join the NCC to develop her overall personality. It was in NCC that Anjum first tried shooting. Initially, she learnt from her seniors as she didn’t have a personal coach. Anjum was always extremely receptive of their advice and suggestions. No wonder that she soon developed a superior technique.
No exact information about Anjum’s assets is available. She has won over 100 national and 20 international medals. Anjum has received prize money from the government as well. After her double gold feat at the South Asian Games in 2016, the Sports Ministry awarded her a prize money of Rs. 5 lakh. Punjab state government awarded her with prize money of 50 lakh for her Commonwealth silver in shooting.
