Vijay Shankar Biography

There was a time in the Indian Cricket Team when all-rounders arrived once in a blue moon. India had part-time spinners who batted but if one goes back in the Indian Cricket history and try to find a genuine seam-bowling all-rounder, one could only find the great Kapil Dev. But, this is not the case today. Today we have several all-rounders like Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin and one rising star who can do magic with both bat and ball is Vijay Shankar.

The current Indian team has two seam bowling all-rounders in Hardik Pandya and Vijay. If the captain wills, he could play both in the World Cup playing XI as Vijay has just proved himself with his pitch-perfect technique and hitting skills too.

However, Vijay is yet to get a lot of opportunities to make a strong case for himself but he is a brilliant and bright prospect.

He made his List A debut for ‘Tamil Nadu’ in 2012 against ‘Andhra’ in Bangalore. In the same year, he made his first-class debut against ‘Vidarbha’ in ‘2012-2013 Ranji Trophy’ at Nagpur, in which he scored 63 runs not out and also picked 2 wickets.

Playing for Tamil Nadu, he won two Man of the Match awards in the knockout stage of the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy. In the quarterfinal against Vidarbha, he scored 111 and 82 for which he was named the Man of the Match. The match was drawn but his team qualified to the next round on a first-innings lead.

In the final against Karnataka, he scored 5 and 103 and picked 1/92. However, Tamil Nadu lost by an innings.

In October 2018, he was named in India C’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with seven dismissals in three matches. In the next month, Vijay was named as one of eight players to watch ahead of the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy.
