There was a time in the Indian Cricket Team when all-rounders arrived once in a blue moon. India had part-time spinners who batted but if one goes back in the Indian Cricket history and try to find a genuine seam-bowling all-rounder, one could only find the great Kapil Dev. But, this is not the case today. Today we have several all-rounders like Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin and one rising star who can do magic with both bat and ball is Vijay Shankar.
The current Indian team has two seam bowling all-rounders in Hardik Pandya and Vijay. If the captain wills, he could play both in the World Cup playing XI as Vijay has just proved himself with his pitch-perfect technique and hitting skills too.
However, Vijay is yet to get a lot of opportunities to make a strong case for himself but he is a brilliant and bright prospect.

Vijay Shankar was born on 26 January 1991 in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. Vijay started playing cricket at a very young age. His father and brother helped him to hone his skills. Initially, he bowled as an off-spinner but later switched to medium pace to become part of the ‘Tamil Nadu’ cricket team as a number of spinners were already there.
He made his List A debut for ‘Tamil Nadu’ in 2012 against ‘Andhra’ in Bangalore. In the same year, he made his first-class debut against ‘Vidarbha’ in ‘2012-2013 Ranji Trophy’ at Nagpur, in which he scored 63 runs not out and also picked 2 wickets.
Playing for Tamil Nadu, he won two Man of the Match awards in the knockout stage of the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy. In the quarterfinal against Vidarbha, he scored 111 and 82 for which he was named the Man of the Match. The match was drawn but his team qualified to the next round on a first-innings lead.
Against Maharashtra in the semifinal, he scored 91 and picked 2/47 to win his second man of the match award. This game was also drawn and Tamil Nadu progressed to the final on first-innings lead. In the final against Karnataka, he scored 5 and 103 and picked 1/92. However, Tamil Nadu lost by an innings.
In October 2018, he was named in India C’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with seven dismissals in three matches. In the next month, Vijay was named as one of eight players to watch ahead of the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy.
In November 2017, Vijay was named as Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s replacement in India’s Test squad for their series against Sri Lanka but wasn’t chosen in the playing XI. February 2018, he was named in India’s T20I squad for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy.
In January 2019, Shankar was named the replacement for Hardik Pandya, who was banned for his controversial remarks on Koffee with Karan, for the remaining two ODIs of the Australian tour and the limited-overs series in New Zealand. On 18 January 2019, he made his ODI debut against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Chennai Super Kings bought him three times in 2013, 2014, and 2015 for the ‘Indian Premier League’ auction but he played only one game in all 3 seasons. In 2016, ‘Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for Rs 35 lakhs for the ‘2016 IPL’ auction.
In 2018, ‘Delhi Daredevils’ (DD) bought him for Rs 3.2 crore for the ‘2018 IPL’ auction. He was traded back to the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2019 IPL season.
