Early Life: Like father like son

Sanjay was born in Mangalore in what was then Mysore State in India, on July 12, 1965. As a schoolboy, he contested in the Cooch Behar Trophy between 1978 and 1982.  Sanjay Manjrekar is son of batting great Vijay Manjrekar. Very few people must have heard about Vijay Manjrekar. With an average of 39.12 he scored 3,208 runs during his career straddling almost a decade and a half.

Talking about First-class cricket, Vijay Manjrekar scored 12,832 runs at an average just below 50. Manjrekar and his son Sanjay jointly scored 5251 runs for India from 92 Tests.  Manjrekar breathed his last in October 1983, in Chennai. “Never make cricket your life, play it as a game”, these were the words said by his father.

He made his debut in first-class cricket in March 1985, where he scored 57 in his only innings for Bombay (now Mumbai) during their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Haryana. In 1985-86, Sanjay struck his first century in first-class cricket against Baroda. He also hit double century for West Zone in 1987. The golden period for Manjrekar was the 1990–91 season where he scored four centuries and one half-century in eight matches. His innings of 224 in the final of the 1994–95 Ranji Trophy is still fresh in minds of many. He won the Ranji title for Bombay. In the season 1996-97, he was appointed as a captain of Mumbai (renamed) for Ranji Trophy and under his legacy Mumbai lifted the Ranji title in 1996-97.

International career

Manjrekar made his international debut, against the West Indies in 1987. He scored meager five and ten in first and second innings respectively, before he retired hurt. He scored his first Test cricket century, against the West Indies in 1988. Manjrekar recorded his final tong against Zimbabwe in 1992. He continued to don Indian jersey until November 1996. With 2,043 Test runs, including four tons  and 1,994 ODI runs in kitty, Sanjay retired from international cricket in 1998.

Retirement

Sanjay Manjrekar, after being in and out of the Indian cricket team for the two years (1996-1998), gave up hopes of wearing the Indian jersey again and announced his retirement from first class cricket in the year 1998. His announcement came in the middle of the super league Ranji match against Railways, in which he made 30 runs off 32 balls in 1998.

Sanjay was born to batting legend Vijay Manjrekar and Rekha Manjrekar. In an emotional recollection, Sanjay said, “My father and mother were very opposites. He was street smart, spoke the language of the street and was known for lewd humour. My mother was a simple South-Indian lady who wore sari to work. She was always well-groomed, not to look pretty but to look well-ordered and clean. Not once did she utter a cuss word. Perhaps that’s what my father liked about her: she was different.”
