“I treat every raid like do-or-die. My only goal is to return with points whenever I am sent in.” These are the famous words of Rishank Devadiga, speaking to a newspaper Livemint.


With every chant of kabaddi kabaddi… raiders display their extreme swiftness and strength. Being a raider is no easy feat. There’s a lot of power, but with this power comes responsibility. One of the most deadly raiders in the world of kabaddi, Rishank is well aware of this.

The young player is displaying superior talent with every raid, and continuously working hard to develop new skills. His signature move ‘running hand touch’ has made him an incredibly successful raider.


No wonder then that he holds the seventh spot in the all-time raid points list of Pro Kabaddi League. He played the first four seasons of the league for the team U Mumba and was later signed on by UP Yoddha. With 449 points in 80 games, he is one of the most successful and sought out players of the league. Rishank was also a part of the Dubai Kabaddi Masters 2018 title-winning Indian team.

Early Life

Rishank first started playing kabaddi when he was just seven. Even at that tender age, his talent and strength were visible to everyone. When he was in school, he decided to pursue kabaddi seriously. His body strength was different than most of his teammates. Managing studies, kabaddi practice, and all the financial aspects wasn’t easy.

Not the one to complain or feel sorry, Rishank took matters in his own hands. He started working as a waiter at the Leela Hotel. This extra income helped him manage all his elementary expenses.

Soon, Rishank became a part of the Mumbai district kabaddi team. He also won the best player award when playing for the Dena Bank. He had to let go of his job to pursue a full-fledged career. His mom’s support was very crucial at this juncture. She supported him completely.

Rishank also represented the BPCL team in the domestic league. He led the Maharashtra team to victory at the Senior National Kabaddi Championship 2017. His stellar performs with the Dena Bank, Maharashtra, and BPCL teams made him a much-sort after player in the Pro Kabaddi League.

International Call-up

 

He got a call for national duty in 2015. The highlight of his career was the 2018 Kabaddi Masters tournament held in Dubai. Rishank was a part of the winning Indian team.

Pro Kabaddi has given opportunities to youngsters all across India. The league has catapulted the popularity of the game. Rishank also got a platform to showcase his talent here. From 5 lakh to 50, and eventually a crorepati, it has been quite a journey for the talented raider.

In season one he was bought by U Mumba for INR 5 lakhs. In season 3. He gave hie personal best performance for U Mumba by scoring 115 points in 16 matches. He played a total of 59 games with the team to total to 320 points. Out of those, 284 were raid points and 36 tackle points.

“I have struggled during my initial days when thinking about kabaddi as a profession was not even a choice. I remember the time when I worked as a waiter to help my mother make ends meet, and that was when I decided I would keep working my way upwards. When I got selected to play for U Mumba, I decided I would give my 100 per cent to remain in the league and earn money. Gradually from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, I can’t believe when I touched the crore-mark. I have always been careful with money and kept my focus solely on helping my family and taking care of them,” he India Today after being named the captain of the UP Yoddha team for the sixth PKL season.

In season 5 of PKL, he was bought by UP Yoddha for Rs.45.50 lakhs. The next season his value was a whopping Rs. 1.11 crores. Rishank has consistently performed well in the league. Every penny that the teams have spent on him has been fruitful for them.

In spite of so much fame and adoration in the last few years, Rishank hasn’t changed a bit. He still remains the hard-working and grounded youngster. One of the fittest athletes in the team, the future is indeed bright for him.

He lost his father at a young age and lived with his mom and sister. His mother supported the family by working in a beauty parlour.
