Peloton just announced a major recall that affects both Peloton treadmill models: the Tread+ and the Tread. The recall comes after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned parents not to use the Tread+ due to reports of injuries and one child's death related to the Peloton treadmill.

People who own a Peloton treadmill should stop using it immediately and contact the company to get a full refund, according to a press release. The company has stopped selling the Tread+ as of today and is working on hardware modifications. Consumers in the U.S. were able to purchase the Tread as part of an invite-only release from November 2020 to March 2021, Peloton said in the release, “and the company is currently working on a repair to be offered to Tread owners in the coming weeks.”

Last month the CPSC warned consumers with children in their homes to immediately stop using the Tread+ after it found “dozens of incidents of children being sucked beneath the Tread+,” SELF reported previously. At the time CPSC was aware of 39 incidents, which included the death of a child in March. The organization said that the Tread+ “poses serious risks to children for abrasions, fractures, and death,” according to a press release. “In light of multiple reports of children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under the rear roller of the product, CPSC urges consumers with children at home to stop using the product immediately.” 

After CPSC released that warning, Peloton called the claims “inaccurate and misleading” and did not initiate a recall—until now. “The decision to recall both products was the right thing to do for Peloton’s Members and their families,” Peloton CEO John Foley said in a new statement. “I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+. We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologize.”

To date, CPSC has now received more than 70 reports of accidents related to the Peloton treadmills. With the Tread+, the CPSC notes that children, pets, or objects can be sucked underneath the back of the treadmill, posing a risk for injury. And regarding the Tread, the CPSC says the touchscreen can detach and fall, possibly injuring anyone underneath it.
