How COVID-19 has impacted Serie A

Abandoned, isolated, and restricted — the beings of this world have experienced nothing but hardships over the last three months. Football, which bears a strong resemblance to life itself, hasn’t been spared either. Footballers, who personify health and fitness, too, have had to bend the knee to the deadly pathogen. Fortunately, however, none of them succumbed to COVID-19 and are raring to go as Serie A gears up to resume from 20th June.

Here’s a list of Serie A stars who have triumphed over COVID-19:

Daniele Rugani

The 25-year-old Juventus midfielder was one of the first high-profile stars to contract the deadly disease in March.

Daniele Rugani’s symptoms were very mild, which allowed him to isolate himself at his own home. He didn’t require any medical intervention and is now COVID-19 free.

Blaise Matuidi

Blaise Matuidi became the second Bianconeri superstar to test positive for COVID-19.

According to Juventus’ official website, the Frenchman was in voluntary home isolation from March 11th and warded off the virus in under a month.

Manolo Gabbiadini

Closely following Juventus’ Rugani, Sampdoria forward Manolo Gabbiadini became the second Serie A player to become COVID-19 positive.

Unlike Matuidi — who was asymptomatic — Gabbiadini had a mild fever. Fortunately, his conditions improved steadily with time, and the player is now corona free.

Albin Ekdal

Gabbiadini’s team-mate, Albin Ekdal, too, tested positive for the virus; only hours after Sampdoria informed the world of the former’s condition.

Ekdal didn’t need hospitalisation and recovered from the disease at his home in Genoa.

Morten Thorsby

After Gabbiadini’s diagnosis, La Samp ramped up the testing for the killer pathogen, which revealed seven more cases — six footballers and club doctor Amedeo Baldari.

None of Morten Thorsby, Albin Ekdal, Bartosz Bereszynski, Fabio Depaoli, Omar Colley, and Antonino La Gumina required hospitalisation, and all of them recovered within a month. As of now, the Sampdoria squad is completely COVID-19 free.

Dusan Vlahovic

Fiorentina striker, Dusan Vlahovic, was the first La Viola player to contract  COVID-19. Unlike Sampdoria stars, Vlahovic had to fight long and hard to beat the virus.

The 20-year-old revealed he had a 102F fever and had to go to the hospital to get himself checked.

Patrick Cutrone

After Vlahovic, Cutrone became the second renowned Fiorentina star to test positive for coronavirus. The 22-year-old admitted he was scared after contracting the “sneaky virus” as he didn’t know what to expect.

Now fit and waiting to fire, Cutrone has decided to dedicate all his goals to frontline health workers.

German Pezzella

Fiorentina skipper, German Pezzella, may very well be one of the toughest contenders on the pitch, but even he wasn’t immune to COVID-19.

Pezzella, fortunately, only had mild symptoms and didn’t require medical assistance.

Marco Sportiello

Atalanta — currently vying for a Champions League place — had a scare in the final week of March when their number one shot-stopper, Marco Sportiello, tested positive for COVID-19.

Thankfully, the 28-year-old was an asymptomatic patient and didn’t require hospitalisation. He is now COVID-19 free and is training, as per revised guidelines.

Daniel Maldini

AC Milan youth team forward, Daniel Maldini, tested positive for COVID-19 in the dying days of March. His father, the great Paolo Maldini, too, tested positive for the pathogen at the same time.

The Maldini duo only had mild symptoms and didn’t require medical intervention. Their most recent tests have come negative, confirming the complete recovery of the two.

Paulo Dybala

The Bianconeri superstar is, without a doubt, the biggest name to contract COVID-19 in Serie A. In the initial days of the pandemic, a rumour claimed that Paulo Dybala had tested positive for coronavirus. Dybala promptly shot it down, claiming he was negative.

Weeks later, the Argentine revealed that he had tested positive for COVID-19 but was in good shape. After weeks of tests, Dybala confirmed his recovery in the first week of May
